The Marc Pro Cycling Team Rolls in to 2018

written by Phil Mooney February 2, 2018

The team formerly known as h24cycling changes title sponsors, adds promising new riders, increases support from key technical sponsors, and continues on as a USA Cycling Domestic Elite Team in 2018.

The Marc Pro Cycling Team presented by Gym One is back! With Marc Pro swapping from a presenting sponsor in 2017 to title sponsor in 2018, along with the support from the all-new sponsor Gym One of Cambria, CA, the team has refreshed their look and branding for the upcoming season and is ready for the racing season to begin.

The 15-rider elite team, racing under the direction of long-time Bay Area cycling fixture Philip Mooney, will be registered as a USA Cycling Domestic Elite team in 2018. The team will retain their core talent from their 2017 season, and bolsters the roster with the addition of 3 new riders. The race calendar will take the team to many of the biggest races in the US and multiple international campaigns around the globe.

Marc Pro president and CEO Ryan Heaney, an avid cyclist himself, is excited for the opportunity to help the team and showcase the benefits of the Marc Pro EMS unit to a wider cycling audience. “Marc Pro is thrilled to support the team with our singular focus on maximizing each individual’s post-exercise recovery. On day 5 of a stage race, the competitors better watch out for the fresh legs of the Marc Pro boys!”

Long base season miles call for equally long relaxing sessions with @themarcpro! Pad placement on the quads to flush out the legs.

Each and every one of our equipment sponsors returns to provide stability and continuity to the team. The team will race aboard the iconic orange frames of KTM Bike Industries with Token’s tubeless-ready Konax Pro carbon wheels running IRC rubber and stopped by TRP’s peerless direct mount brakes. We’ll be steered with a Ritchey WCS cockpit, powered through the industry leading bottom brackets and cranks of Praxis Works, and guided with our Wahoo ELEMNT computers. Rudy Project, the Italian sunglasses and helmet company, will provide their lids and shades to team riders, and long-time sponsor Jakroo will provide the team with top notch clothing throughout the season.

The team will look to our seasoned returning riders for leadership and results throughout the season. The well-known and loved Blake Anton steps up alongside Chris Harland-Dunaway as co-team captain and brings his considerable racing experience and expertise to the team. He will lead the charge for our international racing calendar that will include races in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, China, and Africa. Soon-to-be-graduating UCLA student Sam Boardman will focus his huge engine and individual time trial skills as our leader for the General Classification in most stage races. Finally, good old Willie Meyers, the winningest rider in NorCal over the last few seasons, will bring his good-natured personality and fast finish to races across the country.

The core of our team will be joined by 3 young riders in 2018. 21-year-old Quinten Kirby of San Diego, CA is a proven finisher and looks to unleash his powerful sprint and cagey bike handling skills in PRT and UCI races around the world. Gavin Murray of Sebastapol, CA, will focus his big engine at national level events and hopes to prove his mettle as a crafty rider in breakaways. Former unicycling star Sam Anderson-Moxley of Boulder, CO (by way of Oakland, CA) joins the team and will be looking to increase his experience and seek G.C. results throughout the season after recently graduating from UC Santa Cruz.

The last 3 seasons have been incredibly successful racing seasons for the team, with a number of notable breakthroughs on the national and international scene. In 2015, Justin Rossi’s win in the time trial at the Chico Stage Race and narrow 2nd place in the National Time Trial Championships cemented his place as one of the premier athletes in the nation in the race against the clock. In 2016, Tim Rugg’s podium finish in the GC at the Chico Stage Race, his podium in the White Rock Road Race at Canada’s BC Superweek, as well as his multiple stage wins while guest riding at the UCI 2.2 Tour of Rwanda proved he was one of the strongest riders in the nation. Willie Myers’ back-to-back State Criterium Championships and numerous race wins put him in the crosshairs as the top fast-finisher on the west coast. Sam Bassetti’s breakout 2017 season saw him podium and win UCI and international races around the world.

Lots to reflect on about the past year over the next 2 days before 2018 begins. Here’s a reflection from Mammoth Lakes in the summer!

Elite team roster: Justin Rossi, Chris Harland-Dunaway, Sam Boardman, Matthew Tracey-Cook, Blake Anton, Justin Mauch, Torey Philipp, Dave Christenson, Ryan Moore, Jacob Albrecht, Willie Myers, Nate Freed, Gavin Murray, Quinten Kirby, Sam Anderson-Moxley

I began road racing as an undergraduate after taking a class entitled “The Science of Cycling” as a winter term course at DePauw University. I joined the collegiate cycling team as a freshman, became hooked on cycling, and quickly became a Cat 1 racer on the road and track. I continued to race seriously after moving to northern California for graduate school at UC Davis (Geology). The 2010 season was my first season road racing on a national level at NRC races, riding for the Yahoo! Cycling Team. Immediately after finishing graduate school, I signed my first professional contract and spent the year racing in Europe with Team Raleigh. A few years and many miles later, I made the decision to retire from road racing and start to enjoy more leisurely rides on my mountain bike. In conjunction with this switch, I got married to my wonderful wife, Mandy, and took a more traditional job in the Department of Geology at Sonoma State University. In 2015, I continued to work at Sonoma State while taking over the helm as the owner and manager of Mooney Cycling LLC, the business umbrella that runs the Herbalife p/b Marc Pro - Nature's Bakery Team, and also launching the Bikelangelo brand of custom stem caps with some friends. You can now find me answering emails from my phone as I continue to enjoy riding around beautiful northern California!
