Nevada City Classic definitely sits at the top of my list for favorite NorCal races. The race is well known for its challenging circuit and large crowds out watching. Some notable names like Greg Lemond and Lance Armstrong have also taken part in the race in years past.
In this years edition, the heat was for sure going to be one of the toughest parts of the race and hydration was going to be crucial. Thankfully with Herbalife24, we have some of the best hydration around with their CR7 and Hydrate mix. To make the race harder, I was also on my own against a very strong Mike’s Bikes squad. Being outnumbered, I knew I couldn’t miss a split with any of their riders or it’d be game over. They knew that too. A couple laps in and the Mike’s Bikes riders were attacking off the front. I kept getting on the wheels and then about 4 laps in, I found myself in a break with Cam Bronstein and Chris Riekert of Mike’s Bikes and Cole Davis of the Specialized Junior Team. A few laps later on the descent down Broad Street, Chris rolled off the front and Cam, sitting second wheel, let the gap open up. Cole Davis was spent and it was now just up to me to try to chase. Rode the front on my own, not gaining much ground and then Cam attacked hard on the climb. I had nothing left in the legs to respond and neither did Cole. From then on, I knew I just had to get into time trial mode and try to close the gap or at least hang on for the final spot on the podium. Near the end, the gap started to come down but it was too late. Chris Riekert and Cam Bronstein went 1-2 and I rounded out the podium in 3rd.
Onto the next one!
