Willie, Chirs HD and I represented MPS at the Tri Valley Crit classic on Saturday. With many top guys riding the Folsom historic crit our field was pretty small for a premier series race. As we were outside the port-a-pottie willie and I joked that we were the crit “B” team. Just then, Rainier Schaefer of TMB came out of the bathroom. Willie and I quieted down and things quickly got serious. “How many guys you got?” Schaefer asked. Not wanting to tip our hand too early Willie muttered “I dont know. What about you?” “I think six” Schaefer replied. “Yea I think that’s what we have too” We bluffed.
We set out formulating a plan. Our thought was that Mikes would try for a breakaway since none of their top sprinters were present. We would follow moves and perhaps work with the right mix but ride with the mindset that a field sprint was generally in our favor.
We rode to that affect but it was tough being outnumbered. Mikes refused to work anytime willie was in a move. Eventually a group of six got away containing Zeke Mostov (Hagens Berman), Rainier Schaefer (TMB), David GRUNDMAN (Team BP/Sierra Nevada/Reliable), myself and two other riders. We worked well together and got a comfortable gap. Grundman was an animal and went for all the primes. I just tried to gun it every time through the tailwind section to tire everyone out. Not sure if it worked but I like to think it did something.
The sprint to the finish was fast and required you be first through the last corner. I opened things up early, just after turn 3. Things were looking good until Rainier came through the last corner on the inside. I did my best impression of a sprint and finished third behind Rainier and Grundman. Willie was having an off day and took third in the field sprint.
