Saturday was one of the more roadie friendly editions of the Grasshopper adventures series. The route took us from occidental over coleman valley rd to hwy 1, then south to marshal and chileno valley before turning back north for a steep finish atop joy rd. Team mate Taylor BB and I road out to the start because we were really keen on completing the Quarq 100 mile challenge. When we arrived I realized that I didnt have any money so the nice woman at reg put me down for an IOU. I think Ill try that at the next Velo Promo race.
It was smooth sailing the whole way with the exception of a herd of sheep that breifly neutralized the feild on Coleman valley rd. They were galloping along in front of us and for a brief moment I think we all felt like cowboys. I heard at least a few people yell “yeehaaa!”. Funny stuff.
Going through the town of Bodega Michael Zanetti of Bike Monkey and Kris “Wolverine” Lunning of Tate Labs Bar Fly and myself got away. Taylor BB recalled after the race someone remarking that we would never stay away. Unfortunately for that guy, I got in a good warm up, Kris brought his deep carbon wheels, and Zanetti is just a beast. That, and favorable weather conditions meant we were able to hold off the chasers.
I took the win on top of Joy rd with Kris out sprinting Zanetti for 2nd and 3rd. Taylor almost caught both of them as he charged up Joy and was fourth. I think he had a harder ride than I did because he broke away at Dillon Beach and rode most of the way to the finish on his own. Solid.
Im really looking forward to the Ft. Ross edition on March 16th. Hope you all can make it out.
