The roads are battered and beat, the air is dry on my throat but the sunshine feels like a warm……….stop! I’m racing my bike, enough of this over descriptive wana-be cycling blog literature.
Its the first stage of a velo promo masterpiece, The Madera Stage Race! Punch yourself in the face, start with your foot down, listen to Eamon Lucas grunt like a wwf wrestler punching someone else in the face, get pumped and go! In fact punch yourself in the face for the next 10 miles, 6 miles of rolling nastiness, and 4 miles of gnarly uphill slaughter fest. These roads are worse than cobbles.
As you may or may not know, and I doubt you even care, I consider myself a TT guy, gosh I almost forgot, I’m a national champion. Hint hint….there’s some ego for you! Well this race happens to have two TT’s and that’s why I put the Madera stage race on my calendar as an early season test piece. Why then does a national champion show up and treat it like amateur hour. After Eamon grunted I must have been cursed because I dropped my chain on the first easy roller and did the whole dismount, put the chain on and then proceed to blow up cratering on the 4 mile finishing climb. The watts were falling like trees in an Amazonian slash and burn cocaine plantation.
Day two……….redemption……….don’t think so, its more like the return of amateur hour. I blow by turn two……no flagger just some not so fancy orange safetey cones…Oops…….quickly turn around and hammer it home for 9th place……..that would have been top 5. Eamon beat me by 5 seconds……..cursed!
Lessons to learn
Kieth is sitting pretty in the top 30 and I am 8th or 9th on GC. That means Kieth gets to have a ton of fun tomorrow. I should probably go big or go home myself.
until next time.
