The Chico stage race is a really cool race put on by people who love cycling. I left for Chico at 6:15 AM not realizing the Road Race was an hour past town. I arrived with 20 minutes to get my number, be dressed, and bike ready. The race started with a few attacks I really wanted to get in the break because there were 8 Webcor and 5 Fremont Bank riders, so any move with them would have a good chance. As it turned out the break that stuck had 2 Forum Fitness and one Fremont Bank rider. The race was all together cruising until the gravel when more than half the field got dropped or flatted. This section was the selection maker. After we hit the start /finish line for lap 2, there were about 20 guys left and we rode well together for about 20 minutes to eliminate the guys off the back. I saved as much energy as I could with the intent to crush myself on the last gravel section before the finish. Every thing went according to plan. I got on the front before the gravel then ramped it up. Then I flatted and hated life, race over, 17th. I got in the car and went home to get ready for Copperoppolis.
